I finally got to meet a cowboy! Well, not really. This week, I got to conduct a research interview with Mr. Kurt Daniels, a project manager and publications editor at the Dallas Cowboys. I received his contact information from a former ISM student, Carter Yates, as I’ve seen his work that he was able to produce because of his mentorship with him. However, I was rather saddened when I was told that there will be no outside access to the players, team, and office because of COVID. It’s expected, though, but still upsetting that my chances of doing anything hands-on with sports have basically gone down the drain. Mr. Daniels and I have very similar positions in our “jobs,” as we are both editors of our current publication, whether that be the Dallas Cowboys website or the Frisco High School Yearbook. It was very interesting to hear about what the professional equivalent is to yearbook and what similarities they share. Turns out, there’s a lot! We are both the collectors and fixers of photos, pages, stories, and interviews and put all the pieces together in order to create something appealing to an audience. The only main difference right now is that I take most of the photos for yearbook, but that is my passion and he encouraged me to continue to follow that passion and that I’m off to a great start. This next week I plan on reaching out to more people like Mr. Daniels who are willing to give advice about this field. Additionally, I will be beginning my original work video about football!
